It's intended as an ongoing addition to our full length book, Scrapbook U-Diversity: Redefining The Scrapbooking Industry, available from Fun Facts Publishing. If you're a member of the scrapbook industry in any way, we highly suggest you pick up a copy - it's a comprehensive, detailed resource. You can learn more about the book here.
Happy Scrappin', Inc. Offers Innovative and Diverse Cutouts Happy Scrappin', Inc. debuted at ACCI 2003 with a line of Judaic cutouts, and soon followed with many more diverse lines. Owner Pamela Bielak's products are a much-needed answer for the many diverse scrapbookers who have been searching desperately for products to use on their pages. Pamela takes her Judaic product line beyond the obligatory Chanukah, a holiday other companies who create products for the Jewish faith tend to focus on. Her first seven lines included cutouts for Chanukah, Passover, Bar Mitvah, Bat Mitvah, Yiddish Expressions, Shabbat and the Hebrew Alphabet. They are on 84 lb. cardstock, which is both acid free and chlorine free (making them environmentally friendly as well). Other products
include Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, Ukrainian Christmas, and "Living
with Asthma." Color An Angel Addresses The Need For Ethnic Scrapbook Products Color An
Angel is "your resource for ethnically diverse scrapbook stickers
that appropriately reflect you and your memories." Owners Danielle
Duchatellier Boucree and Nicole Tarlton Cole started Color An Angel
after realizing the need they both shared to truly personalize the scrapbooks
they were creating for their families. "Ethnic minorities deserve
a line of products dedicated to them, their cultures and their history,"
they state on their web site. Their current product selection includes
Cocoa Kids, Chiquitines, Chop Sticks Kids, and Angelic Accents. Visit
them here. Reminders of Faith Reminders of Faith is the first publishing company specializing in the Christian scrapbook market. The company, founded by Sandra Joseph, president, and Kathy Brundage, vice president of operations, offers an exclusive line of spiritual books, devotional journals, papers, and assorted scrapbooking embellishments. Joseph
is founder and former national director of Memories Community and has
written several articles for various publications. Brundage has a background
in business, computer operations, and professional photography. Click

Naomi Epstein & Warren Orlans started The Embellishment Store in the summer of 2003, to bring unique embellishments to paper crafters of all types. "We are always asked about themed embellishments, and Judaic products seemed to be in short supply. After unsuccessfully searching for a source of traditional, elegant six pointed star eyelets, we decided to create our own," explains Epstein. Not just for Jewish celebrations, these lacy stars add a delicate touch in starry skies for scrapbookers and paper crafters of all faiths. For more
information, visit The
Embellishment Store or call 416-484-7229. In Brief: New Companies/Products Reflecting Diversity

Scrapbook, Too! - The Media Finally Begins to Notice In addition,
a December 28, 2003 article in The New York Times also acknowledged
that more and more men were getting involved in scrapbooking. YM Magazine and JournalTEK Team Up to Offer Scrapbooking Software for Girls Teen magazine

Making the Connection: Reaching Out to the Hispanic Market, "will
help you understand the demographics and dynamics of the changing Hispanic
marketplace and teach you how to further engage Hispanic consumers in
crafting." We'll have more on this topic later in February. Hobby Industry Association Releases First Study on Hispanic Crafters The Hobby Industry Association conducted the first study of crafting by Hispanics living in the U.S. The study indicated that Hispanics spend $1.9 billion on crafts annually, a number that should increase, as this "minority" is the fastest growing in the U.S. According to the study, which surveyed Hispanics in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Antonio, 63% of the respondents said that they had participated in scrapbooking in the past, and 31% are interested in learning more about it. However, it did not indicate how many Hispanics are currently scrapbooking. This is a figure we need to know, because once designers and manufacturers see that there's a need for it, they will develop more diversified and multicultural scrapbooking products, and thus benefit us all. Two other
interesting notes are that 66% of Hispanic crafters say it's important
to have information in Spanish about their crafting activity; and Art/Drawing
is the single most popular crafting activity. Memory Makers Magazine Recognizes Need For "Adult" Idea Book Memory Makers Magazine is right on track with the latest wave of scrapbooking: "adult" scrapbook pages. As more and more people embrace this hobby, the diversity of scrapbookers grows. And the truth is, there are now many scrapbookers who do not have children to document in their albums-but they do have many other life experiences. Memory Makers has recognized this. The magazine
put out the call in Autumn 2003 looking for page submissions "featuring
adults and their grown-up lives. Pages may feature friendships, family
life, romance, careers, hobbies, accomplishments, milestones...the sky
is the limit as long as adults are the stars and featured center stage."

"The Singles Ward," released in 2002 and now available in
VHS and DVD, includes scrapbooking. The film is created by and stars
members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and revolves
around the Church. In researching this film (which received mixed reviews
on IMDB.com, with some viewers explaining that there were many "insider"
jokes that were hard to understand), I discovered a Web site that some
of you may find interesting. LDSFilm.com
devotes itself to information on movies by and about Latter-day Saints.
